Urumqi, with a population of about 3 million people, is the capital of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in the northwest. These photos were all taken in and around the Grand Bazaar, which is the center of the city’s Muslim Uyghur ethnic minority population. Recent ethnic conflict has made this a tense place.
